Projects in Need of Funding

Can AI Think Like a Woman?

Can AI reproduce the measurable strategic decision-making characteristics associated with female participation in strategic
decision-making and professional wargaming?

Turning evidence about female strategic thinking into a new capability for Defence

Our research into women and professional wargaming asked a simple question: when men and women are given the same strategic problem, the same information and the same options, do they make different decisions? The
evidence suggests that they do.

Breast Feeding Network UK Armed Forces

The Defence Breastfeeding Network launched in June 2020, to support breastfeeding soldiers during their maternity and return to work phase. It has established 124 rooms across the estate to support those breast feeding. There is a need for more rooms, but also the equipment to go in them. We are accepting donations for furnishings, including fridges, or encourage you to go to the Amazon wishlist to support.

Oxygen study

Poor breast support costs women oxygen. Research on female athletes shows that better support lowers the oxygen cost of running, while poor support means less in reserve, earlier fatigue and slower recovery. Add body armour, which already restricts the chest, and that cost is likely to compound.

No one has ever measured it under armour, under operational load, or in servicewomen and police officers. This study will.

£27,500. Six months.

Health is why it matters to her. Oxygen cost is why it matters to the force.

Measuring pressure on the breast under armour

For servicewomen, crushed breasts under body armour are a daily reality. In the UK's National Policing Survey, it was the single most reported problem among women wearing armour, driving sickness absence, poor PPE compliance and women leaving the service.

Everyone knows it happens. Nobody has ever measured it. This study will.

£30,000. Four months.

The study is scoped, joint publication is agreed in principle, and conversations with armour manufacturers are opening. It pairs with our oxygen study: this one measures the force, that one measures what it costs in capability.

Everyone agrees armour hurts women. This study is the first to say by how much.
